Environmental Geology by Edward A. Keller,

Environmental Geology by Edward A. Keller,
This book offers one of the most comprehensive, up-to-date treatments of environmental geology available--from fundamental geologic principles to the specifics of environmental law and geological hazards. It fully discusses both processes and environmental issues, and where appropriate, includes boxes with quantification of processes. Case Histories and examples reflect a cross-section of the United States, and Special Features boxes highlight "classic" and recent environmental disasters. Features high-quality photographs and illustrations throughout. Earth Materials and Processes. Soils and Environment. Natural Hazards: An Overview. Rivers and Flooding. Landslides and Related Phenomena. Earthquakes and Related Phenomena. Volcanic Activity. Coastal Hazards. Water: Process, Supply, and Use. Water Pollution and Treatment. Waste Management. The Geologic Aspects of Environmental Health. Mineral Resources and Environment. Energy and Environment. Global Change and Earth System Science. Air Pollution. Landscape Evaluation and Land Use. Spirit of the American Southwest: Geology/Ancient Eras and Prehistoric People/Hiking Through Time by Tom Prisciantelli,
Spirit of the American Southwest: Geology/Ancient Eras and Prehistoric People/Hiking Through Time by Tom Prisciantelli,
Here, in simple, straightforward language, is an exploration of the events and geologic processes responsible for the stunning beauty of the deserts, plateaus and mountains in the American Southwest. After a brief look at the basics of geology and archaeology, the reader is taken on hikes that feature the most interesting geologic structures and the sites inhabited by Paleo-Indians thousands of years before Christ. The twelve hikes range from desert preserves in the middle of Phoenix, Arizona to remote mountains in northern New Mexico. The spectacular scenery tells a story of volcanic forces and ancient seas that sculpted plateaus and drove up the largest of mountain ranges. Five geologically related hikes cover Arizona, three are in New Mexico and one in Utah. The last three hikes, all in New Mexico, focus on geology and archaeology, covering the entry of the first nomadic hunter-gatherers, and their prey, into the Southwest. The book ends with a basic guide to geologic concepts and an introduction to rock identification for those who wish to learn more.TOM PRISCIANTELLI spent many years driving and researching the American Southwest and documenting those geologic and archaeological facts he found most interesting and accessible via hiking trails. His first exposure to geology was in the mid-1960s while attending college in New Mexico where he graduated. After a two-year stint in the Army, he moved back and forth between the East Coast and Southwest. Having spent most of his working life in the computer field, he started his own contracting business, eventually leaving it in order to actualize his dreamto travel and learn about the land. Spirit of the American Southwest is a result ofthat dream and the desire to share it.

Deposition (geology) - Deposition, also known as sedimentation, is the geological process whereby material is added to a landform. This is the process by which wind, water, or ice create a sediment deposit through the laying down of granular material that has been eroded and transported from another geographical location.

Dialectic process vs. dialogic process - In a dialectic process describing the interaction and resolution between multiple paradigms or ideologies, one putative solution establishes primacy over the others. The inherent aim of a dialectic process is to achieve this state of conceptual domination.

Zombie process - On Unix operating systems, a zombie process or defunct process is a process that has completed execution but still has an entry in the process table, allowing the process that started it to read its exit status. In the term's colorful metaphor, the child process has died but has not yet been reaped.

Tectonic uplift - A tectonic uplift is a geological process most often caused by plate tectonics which increases elevation. The opposite of uplift is subsidence, which results in a decrease in elevation.
