Sport Initiation

Although Triumph's sporting heritage can be traced back to the 1920s, its greatest success began with the introduction of the TR2 in 1953. Other models -- such as the Spitfire, GT6, and TR Series -- followed on the heels of this initial success, and even came to represent the quintessential British sports car. This colorful history recounts the design, engineering, and sales successes of Triumph's popular models. Vivid photography and lively prose follow these British sports cars from their technical development, promotion, and motorsport conquests (with drivers like Stirling Moss and Bob Tulius), to Triumph's last hurrah with the V-8-powered TR8 and ultimate decline under the auspices of British Leyland.

Originally published in 1981 and long out of print, A Farewell to Heroes covers five unforgettable decades of the New York sporting life from 1915 to 1965. Told initially from the point of view of Frank Graham, premier sportswriter for The New York Sun. This dual autobiography also includes the writings of Frank, Jr., who picks up the narrative as he becomes a sports journalist in his own right. Frank Graham, Sr., was a self-taught writer known for his uncanny ability to capture the high drama of a game-winning play or the color of a fight mob's conversation in spare, straightforward prose. As a reporter, he covered the rough-and-tumble Giants of John McGraw's day and continued through boxing's greatest era, spanning the reigns of Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis. As the younger Frank tells more of the story, we watch Lou Gehrig take Babe Ruths place as the Yankees' star and then trace his glorious career to its tragic conclusion. We see firsthand the legendary Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson and boxing's brief but golden age on television in the 1950s. Aided by sixteen photographs and preserving the most masterful of his father's writing while adding to it the best of his own, Frank Graham, Jr., has given the sports fan A Farewell to Heroes, perhaps the ultimate sports reminiscence of a time when the romance of sport gave life a golden hue, when heroes still roamed the earth.

Minority sport - A minority sport is one which has very little following or participation in a particular region or state. While followers of a minority sport will be just as passionate and enthusiastic as a follower of a mainstream sport, but will suffer for having to make more sacrifices in order to follow their sport.

Pulp Sport - Pulp Sport is a New Zealand TV show that mixes sport with comedy that first started it's life on Radio Sport in 2001 and was the Number 1 show, in Auckland, on a Sunday night, between 9:30 and 11. The TV series then started in 2003 on Sky Sport and is hosted by Bill and Ben.

Nationalism and sport - Nationalism and sport are often intertwined, as sports provide a venue for symbolic competition between nations; sports competition often reflects national conflict, and in fact has often been a tool of diplomacy. Invented sport - An invented sport refers to a modern-day sport which is conceived and developed by a single person, team, or committee. Unlike most sports, which are derived from pre-existing pastimes or sport-like activities, invented sports have a direct lineage to a complete set of rules designed by an inventor to be different than what was before, rather than an improvement or codification of an existing sport or contest.
